Just a little update....

So since adding the new lights Ive had a bit of a algae bloom most likely due to the new lighting setup as well as me over-feeding the fish/corals. I bought a phosphate reactor today on ebay to hopefully help eliminate the algae. I recently also won 7 new corals on ebay including 2 new Acans and 2 new chalices. Pics will be coming when there is less algae on everything :\

Wow what a day....

So today I picked up a few new corals from one of my local fish stores. I only have pics of the 3 of the pieces for now.

The first pics are of the Maxima Clam and 2 Acans. The rest of the new stuff are mostly zoas or palys. I'll try to get pics of them as they open up and adjust to my tank.

Been awhile.........

Well it's been a few month since my last update.

About 2 months ago one of my connections on my light shorted almost causing a fire.  I was out of town or busy the next couple of week so it took about a month to order a new light and then another week after that for it to arrive. Then it arrived with 3 busted bulbs from shipping so I had to wait for the replacements to arrive. Finally last week I got the 3 replacements and now I have a 6x54 watt T5 setup. Currently I have it setup with 3 actinic bulbs and 3 6500k bulbs. This is extremely bright and I like the blue tint so I may switch up the 6500s for another bulb.

Ive also added a 10 gallon refugium to the tank to add some natural filtration to the Eheim monster filter that Ive had running for awhile now. The refugium is also home to my terror wrasse that picked on corals, snails, and other fish.

Because of the lighting failure it looks like i've lost a decent amount of my corals. I lost 1 bubble-tip anemone for sure, hammer coral, candy cane, and a few zoa/palys. The xenia are hanging on as well as a couple of other less hardy corals. Hopefully the ones hanging on will survive.

I will post some new pics after a tank cleaning and when the corals adjust to the new light. I also need to come up with a ceiling mount or some kind of stand for the lights since they are just resting on cardboard at the moment.

Gravel Vac Pro

So my most recent Eheim product is the Gravel Vac Pro.  I have owned a few of the other gravel cleaning tools in my time but this one has proved to be the best so far. It comes un-assembled in the box but only takes about 2 minutes to get the batteries, which are provided, into the vac and assemble the unit and starting using it.  It's nice to be able to clean the substrate without having to do a water change and not make a huge mess with the other gravel vacuums.  I highly recommend the Gravel Vac Pro to anyone looking for a great substrate cleaner that is worry free!!

This past weekend I was lucky enough to pick up 7 new corals from a LFS that was having an incredible sale.

I also picked up another 15lbs of live rock and did some aquascaping on Saturday.

Eheim Pro 3 2080 Review

     The Eheim Pro 3 is an exceptional filter that does come with a hefty price tag. Of course these days what doesn't. There is a difference with the Pro3 is you are getting your moneys worth and then some.

     There is a sweet 450GPH output with this filter which is plenty for my 75Gallon mixed reef setup. The filter is rated up to a 320Gallon aquarium. There are 2 inlet connections and a single outlet. This allows for water to be filtered from opposite ends of the tank which is something I was missing with a single inlet canister filter. You can also manually adjust the water flow to a desired amount.

     This filter features an in-line heater that heats your water as it enters/exits the filter and is set via a LCD display screen. This ensures your water temp is exactly what you want it to be.

     Included in the box is everything needed to get your filter up and running; spray bar, almost 15feet(14'9") of tubing,  a drip tray, safety clamps, all necessary fittings,  1 coarse filter pad and 1 ehfisynth fine filter pad.  The physical dimensions of the filter are: 12" x 12.75" x 23".

     This has been the best filter I have owned and will look no further than Eheim for all of my future filter needs.  Probably the best feature of all is the low consumption of power that will reduce the electricity my previous filters were using. This single filter replaced 2 other canister filters and 3 heaters in the tank. I would/will be highly recommending this filter to all of my family and friends.

Aquariums are becoming more and more popular these days, and as a result, the surrounding technology begins to evolve. The Eheim 3582 Twin is no exception.

 

If you are a bargain-hunter, you won’t like the near $80.00 price tag, but with this automatic feeder, keep in mind that you will be getting all $80.00 worth and then some. The feeder features two large capacity hoppers, and can handle a variety of types of food. The feeder can be programmed to dispense food up to 6 times per day, and each feeding is customizable. A manual override feature is also incorporated on this unit as well. Programming the unit is a challenging task at first, especially since the owners manual incorporates five languages per section, but once you figure out the general concept, the programming process becomes very simple. That will become almost useless information however, since the feeder stores the programmed information to memory between battery changes.

 

The feeder sits atop your aquarium, either with rubber feet or Velcro, both are provided. Yes, this is not the most secure method of fixing such a product to your aquarium, but due to the weight of the unit, the rubber feet held the unit in place surprisingly well, and was exceptionally secure using the provided Velcro. In addition, the unit uses batteries, rather than outlet power, reducing the chance that a power cord is moved, lessening the chance of the product tumbling onto the floor resulting in a mess – or worse, electrocution.

 

This product is not for people with small aquariums, or with small amounts of fish. This is due to the large size of feeding unit – on small aquariums it looks out of place, and it cannot dispense very small portions of food. However, the unit looks right at home atop an aquarium over 30 gallons. This product is most suitable for on-the-go people with larger aquariums requiring a varied diet. If your aquarium has a complex feeding schedule, and you don’t always have time to feed properly, look no further than the Eheim 3582 Twin.
